Speaker: Rene M. Padilla, Physics UCSC, Spring 2025

Rene M. Padilla was born in the United States, and he grew up in Mexico. When
he was almost 17 years old, he decided to come back to the United States with one
purpose in mind—being a scientist. In 2012, Rene began his studies at Modesto Junior
College, where he completed an associate’s degree in physics and transferred to CSU
Stanislaus. There, he finished his bachelor’s degree doing experimental research in LZ
dark matter detection. He joined the Physics Ph.D. program at UC Santa Cruz in fall
2019, under the guidance of distinguished professor Bruce Schumm. Rene has
contributed to the development of one of the fastest ionizing particle diagnostic systems
ever conceived, making incredible advancements in R&D instrumentation research. His
hard work enabled him to receive the UC President’s Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings
Fellowship in 2024. Through this prestigious fellowship Rene was able to travel to
Germany for the first time and participated in the 73 rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting,
where he shared a week full of social activities with Physics Nobel Laureates and young
scientist from across the world. In the future, Dr. Padilla hopes to continue expanding
the development of fast diagnostic instruments for broad applications including plasma
physics and proton spectrometry.
