Professional development encompasses learning and mastering multiple types of knowledge, skills, relationships, and personal traits that will benefit you in all stages of your academic and post-academic careers. You will learn many of these things through your coursework, research, teaching, mentoring relationships, publishing, presentations and performances, service activities, and experiences in the lab, studio, or public outreach.

Postdoctoral Scholars
Postdoctoral scholars at UC Santa Cruz participate in cutting-edge research backed by the resources and benefits of the University of California statewide system, all while enjoying UCSC’s collegial atmosphere and scenic California coast location.

Professional Organizations
Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at UC Santa Cruz are automatic members of and have access to resources provided by the Accelerate to Industry (A2i) Program, the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, the National Postdoctoral Association, Beyond the Professoriate, and more.

Professional Skills
The Graduate Division has identified nine categories of Professional Skills to help you gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities to equip you for success in graduate school and beyond. These skills are interrelated and transferable, no matter your degree, discipline, or career goals.
