Academic Notice

Academic Notice is a formal designation and process to help students meet their degree objectives and complete their degree requirements within normative time. Academic Notice may be recommended when a student has been identified as experiencing academic difficulty and does not make satisfactory progress when implementing the Academic Support Plan. It is primarily used when a program has identified that a student is not meeting documented academic expectations, and should be viewed as a form of collaborative structural support with clearly defined expectations of the student. Academic Notice is required before a student may be recommended for Academic Disqualification.

Academic Notice includes a formal written agreement with the student’s home graduate program and the Graduate Division that specifies goals and deadlines that must be met for the student to emerge from notice status and continue in the program. The timeline for such an agreement should be at least one quarter and no more than one academic year. If a student on Academic Notice fails to make adequate progress after a minimum of one quarter, the department may request from the Graduate Dean that the student be academically disqualified. Departments may recommend a student for Academic Notice or Academic Disqualification under a shorter time frame through a formal exception from the Graduate Dean; however, graduate programs should escalate to disqualification only after a student has been informed in writing of deficiencies, and given an academic plan and provided adequate time to correct the deficiencies. The graduate program should consult with the Graduate Student Services team in the Graduate Division regarding this process.
