These interactive in-person workshops provide an overview of strategies and best practices for public speaking, including managing anxiety, key delivery techniques, and composition tips for crafting clearer and more focused speeches, with an emphasis on the parameters of the Grad Slam’s short presentations. It will include some interactive personalized exercises. (Five Grad Slam preliminary rounds, one per academic division, will be held February 3-7, 2025, at the Graduate Student Commons.)

UCSC faculty and alum Catherine Carlstroem (PhD American Literature) is a longtime lecturer in Humanities at UCSC (over 30 years) and has enjoyed teaching public speaking for over 10 of these. Along with teaching, she coordinates the Cowell Core Course.
